Noses permit a several different variants in piercing. The nose is cartilage, so this tissue is harder to pierce and can be more problematic to heal compared with ear lobes, which are soft tissue.

Nostril - it is the most usual spot for a nose piercing. The accessories is put somewhere along the rim of the nostril, either on the left or the right area of the nose. There is no implication or meaning to which side you get pierced, it's just your own desire. Every thing you know to the contrary is just urban myth. A ring or stud is recommended for starting but make sure the accessories is not too tight to the nose if it is a stud. That can cause healing problems.

Septum - these kinds of piercings are placed in the cartilage wall around the chambers of the nose, at the bottom of the nostrils. It's sometimes called a "bull ring" as you occasionally see cattle having this style of nostril piercing. It could be a bit sensitive to pierce, or if the ring gets snagged. This is the only kind of nose piercing that can be made completely and truly invisible.

Bridge - frequently knowned as an "Earl" piercing shortly after the 1st man to obtain this kind of modification, this piercing is done on the surface of the bridge of the nose, lining up in between the eyes. This piercing can be very hard to recover and carries a high potential for rejection or recovery out.
