History of Nose Piercing

Bookmark and Share
Nose piercing has been a part of various world cultures for centuries.

It's simply been in the last 2 centuries that nose piercing has gotten a mainstream popularity in European culture.

In India, nose piercings were brought by the Moghul emperors from the Middle East on 16th century. Left nostrils and both were a typical place for a piercing. A chain combining ring with an ear was rather widespread. Left nostrils were prevalent in nose piercing because in India it was related to female reproductive organs and they thought that the piercing of this place would make the childbirth much simpler.

In the late 1960's hippies made a journey to India and they introduced the tradition of nose piercing to the West Europe and United states. Piercing of the nose symbolized defiance from conventional values in punk culture and was very popular in the late 1970's.

These days, in our society piercing is the 2nd most-popular body piercing frequently done for the purpose of beauty and fashion, desired by teens and young people, after ear piercings.

Nose piercings don't always heal as easily as people assume. They do not cure as quickly as pierced ears, and they could be more likely to create scar tissue or have other healing issues.
